TRYOUT FAQ

How old do I need to be?

You need to be at least 18 years old

I have never played football before, does that matter?

A majority of our players have never played football before becoming a Nighthawk. Our coaches will teach you everything you need to know from the dimensions of a football field to tackling to learning your playbook. What we need are dedicated women who are eager to learn!

Are there many injuries?

Like any sport, especially a contact, physical sport such as football there will be injuries. The most common are pulled muscles and sprains. Of course you can decrease your risk by being in-shape, properly warming up and working on flexibility.

Do I need to attend all three tryouts?

You are not obligated to attend all three tryouts; however, after you pay and complete a tryout you are welcome and encouraged to come to the following try outs to work on your skills and conditioning, and to meet your potential teammates.

What are you looking for in a player?

We really want dedicated women who are eager to learn and have some type of athletic background. Many sports such as basketball, lacrosse, rugby and soccer translate very well onto the football field. Any background in sports is helpful. We are looking for women of ALL shapes and sizes!

When do you practice?

Practice begins in January inside in an indoor practice facility. In March, we will move to our outdoor football field. We practice every Tuesday and Thursday evening and on Saturday mornings through the end of March.

I cannot attend all practice; can I still be on the team?

Teams that have good attendance win more games. We highly encourage attendance but we understand that players have jobs and families outside of the team. We do expect players to have at least a 90% attendance.

What do you do at tryouts?

Tryouts are set up similar to an NFL Combine. We have a series of drills to test different skill sets and positions. Not every player will do great on every drill especially if you have not played football before. These drills give the coaches a look at your base athleticism and evaluate your potential for different positions.

Nighthawks Nation,
As Coronavirus (COVID-19) spreads throughout the world our thoughts are with you. The health and safety of our athletes, coaches, operations and support staff, fans, sponsors and community remain our priority. We hope everyone is following the guidelines in their area and staying healthy and safe. We would like to provide an update on the 2020 season. Our league, the Womenʼs Football Alliance (WFA) has delayed the start of the season. As a result, and in conformance with our state and local governmentsʼ directives and recommendations, we have canceled all in-person activities including practice, community outreach and fundraising until we have confirmation that it is safe to resume. We are excited for the season and look forward to the opportunity to provide you with the best fan experience possible.

HISTORY

The Baltimore Nighthawks was formed in 2007, for the purpose of teaching women in the greater Baltimore area the sport of football. Since then our purpose has grown to attracting talented athletes throughout Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and DC to elevate women’s tackle football to the forefront of women’s sports.

I believe it is important to give women an opportunity to live their gridiron dreams. My aim is to deliver the message that women do belong on the football field. Football is the ultimate team sport. The knowledge, relationships and memories gained by playing this game are priceless. My plans, hopes and ambitions are to bring women's football to a broader market and represent Baltimore proudly. Being positive examples extends off the football field into the community we live and play in. As a team, we have contributed our time to various charities including Healthcare for the Homeless and Mascots for a Cure. We believe it is important to work with our youth and get them moving and excited about fitness and sports. Many players and coaches work with various youth programs, or go to elementary schools as speakers to promote the importance of sport and education. We were members of the Independent Women's Football League (IWFL) for nine years. The IWFL was founded in 2000 by a group of women dedicated to making women's football a viable sport.  In 2010 members of the IWFL represented the United States as Team USA in the inaugural IFAF Women's World Championship. Team USA won the gold medal and I was happy to be part of that team as Team Manager for the Defense. In 2012 we were the Mid-Atlantic Division Champions. In 2014 we were honored to represent the Eastern Conference in the Founders Bowl. At the start of our 10th season, we joined the WFA (Women’s Football Alliance).  We look forward to our next season and the opportunity to increase the impact of women’s tackle football across the world.

2020 Chocolate Affair

The Chocolate Affair was the first opportunity I had to be with my team outside of practice. It was also the first time I did an event like this. I did not know what to expect and even with instructions on the style of dress, I had no idea what to wear. However, I was excited to support the cause and represent my team. I grew up in Baltimore, so I have seen firsthand how bad some of the homeless need assistance. Standing in the ballroom with my team surrounding not only me, but the entire room filed with guests was a bit surreal. Listening to the stories and watching videos on what Healthcare for the Homeless has already done almost brought me to tears. It is always amazing when you see a community come together for a common goal. It made be extremely proud to be a part of it all. With so many volunteers we went through that crowd collecting donations in very quick order. Reaching our goal and still receiving donations was great to see. After business was done, we were able to indulge in the best chocolate delights I have ever had. Some of which went along great with the spirit of our choice! After all of that, there was still time for us all to cut loose. The Baltimore Nighthawks hit the dance floor showing off our moves and had a ball! I would do this event every year, given the opportunity. Tanesha Carter #78
